Cheap Self Storage and Other Ways to Create Space in a Home
The U.S. economy does well when businesses are productive and consumers purchase more goods. This becomes an issue if people acquire too many goods for their homes. If this issue arises, people can find that their living quarters are overcrowded with things. Sometimes our houses can even become almost like those shown on the popular television show, Hoarders. Programming like Hoarders and Clean House provide a look at extreme cases of disorder. Many of us suffer from a lesser degree of overcrowding in our homes. Fortunately, you do not need the help of television producers to minimize the number things in your home. There are a quite a few steps you can take to make more room in your house. Specifically, something to think about investing in is cheap self storage.
Here are some steps to help you reclaim your home from all your stuff:
Begin with the closets. It is best to clean out closets around every two years. Make two piles. One pile should contain the items you use often and want to keep. The other pile should contain the items you use rarely and will discard. After you place the bulk of your closet into these piles, take the discard pile, put it in boxes, and drive it over to the nearest Goodwill or shelter. Donating can raise your spirits and provide you with the additional advantage of a tax write off. There is also equipment you can put in your closets to save space. This equipment includes drawers, hanger rods, and shelving, and it is especially useful for smaller closets.
Pay attention to the upkeep of garages and attics. It is wise to clean thoroughly and organize both the garage and attic once or twice a year. Toss out or give away toys, tools, and appliances you haven’t used in over a year. Put shelves in on the walls and make use of some racks. Both of those will clear up a great deal of space. Racks that can be mounted to the ceiling are an excellent idea because they can store quite a few items out of sight and can reduce the appearance of clutter. You’ll be happy about all the work you do in the garage when you can finally park your car in it.
Find a proper place for the items around your house. Look for transparent storage bins at shops like Target and WalMart. These come in all sizes and are optimal for storing all kinds of things. Because they are transparent, you will be able to easily find what you need in them. It’s wise to put similar items in the same bin to help you find them quickly. Bins that can be stacked also exist and can be more effective to save space. If you are the owner of a lot of compact discs, you could consider uploading a large portion of your music onto your computer. That way, you are still able to access your music on iTunes or Windows Media Player, and you can get rid of some of your CDs. If you have an Amazon Kindle or other eReader, you can scrap some of your books, especially those you’ve already read. Videos and DVDs can be discarded if you have a Netflix or Hulu subscription.
Buy some racks, shelves, and transparent storage containers. Using those things in your closets, garage, and throughout your house, will help you get organized and stay organized. If the amount of stuff you own is still disproportionate to the amount of space in your home, you may need to begin looking for a self storage unit in your area.
